Job Description
  1. Job Summary

We currently have one vacancy for a Central Plant Operator I, II, or III. The hiring level will depend on the candidate’s qualifications.

Perform semi-skilled work under the direction of more qualified personnel and skilled work without supervision in the operation of large industrial water chiller units, high pressure steam boilers, and related thermal plant equipment. Work level based on individual training and the needs of the organization on an assigned shift.

Assist in maintenance and repair of plant equipment.

Assist in laboratory analysis of Central Plant waters and add prescribed chemicals as needed to the various feed systems.

Clean thermal plant with exposure to industrial machinery, rotating equipment, high voltage electrical service, hot steam, chemicals, and noise.

Must use appropriate personal protective equipment as required (hard hat, vest, gloves, safety glasses, etc.). These items are provided and are not for personal use.

Employee in this position is required to work an 8-hour, rotating shift on weekdays, and a 12-hour rotating shift on weekends, as assigned – including holidays, and work overtime when needed.

Heavy lifting is required, sometimes exceeding 50-pounds. Occasional moving about, including ascending/descending stairs or ladders, is required to accomplish work – as well as remaining in a stationary position for an extended period of time; work may take place in small mechanical rooms and other maintenance activity areas.

Must work safely and promote a safe environment.

This position is considered essential. Operators are expected and required to report to the plant for work even when the campus is closed.

  1. Position Qualifications

Required:

High School Diploma/GED and one year of work experience. Technical education/training in a mechanical/electrical field may be substituted for one year of experience.

Must have before hire and maintain after hire, a valid driver’s license. A valid driver’s license must be maintained for the operation of an OSU vehicle, which is required in the performance of job duties as assigned.

Have upon hire or within 12-months an EPA Refrigeration Handler Type II certification.

Must be able to follow directions as presented by the supervisor; be computer literate; be a team player, and be capable of working independently as directed in the performance of some routine duties.

Ability to become proficient in the use of “AiM” Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) software and the use of mobile technology.

Required to work safely and promote a safe environment.

Preferred:

Five years of experience in mechanical or electrical trade. Technical education/training in a mechanical/electrical field may be substituted for one year experience.

Current EPA Refrigeration Handler Type II certification.

DOL Boiler Operator certification.
