Job Description


The Data Science Analyst is responsible for leading the mathematical modeling and analysis to evaluate critical business opportunities and value add activities. Primarily the analysis will involve using statistical methods and machine learning and as necessary using big data technologies to generate practical solutions to complex problems. Typical projects for the data science team will focus on identifying cost saving, revenue opportunities, and the development of sustainable optimization tools.


Develop the approaches and methods to define and solve management problems through quantitative analysis and analytical models, using operations research, statistics, machine learning, forecasting techniques and structured programming languages and packages such as Spark or Hadoop.
Develop mathematical modeling and forecasting tools to support the business
Participates in model design, prototype, and model development for several efforts that occur simultaneously.
Identifies, researches, or solves large complex problems using big data
Designs analytic plan/develop hypotheses to test; understands limitations of analysis
Understands the intuition behind the numbers (do the numbers make sense)
Communicate results within data science team and assist with communication to management and client organization.
Work with stakeholders to facilitate the development of data science projects to address functional and technical questions across the organization.
Participate in planning and strategy activities to ensure business objectives for data science team are being covered and addressed.
Profile data sources using SQL and other data discovery tools in support of data quality analysis and business intelligence design efforts
Ensure that appropriate data access controls, data quality controls and remediation plans are compliant with defined company standards
Identify and analyze risks/problems and recommend actionable implementation solutions on behalf of the data science team
Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by management

Experience doing analysis of operations environments focused on improving results, optimizing decisions, or resource planning.
Ability to demonstrate strong analytical and problem-solving skills with real-life datasets, and should be able to abstract mathematical models from real-life problems
Data Mining experience using SQL querying.
Experience doing statistical evaluations using tools such as R and SAS.
Ability to manage, prioritize and deliver multiple initiatives in partnership with cross-functional teams.
Self-starter and results oriented, with a focus on quality and attention to detail
Ability to conduct discovery, perform root cause analysis, and make recommendations for the remediation of data quality issues
Strong MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project, and Visio skills, knowledge of SQL, SharePoint, .NET, statistical tools and business intelligence tools

Bachelor’s degree or higher in Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, or related field, with a Master’s degree preferred.
Minimum of 2+ years of experience in operations research, industrial engineering, statistics, or applied mathematics with a preference given to oil and gas operations.
Strong understanding and experience with statistical methods, mathematical modeling and machine learning.

Ability to lift files, open filing cabinets, and bend or stand as necessary. Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time. The ability to use a computer, tablet or smart phone for extended periods of time. Basic use of office equipment such as copier and fax machines. Ability to lift up to 10 pounds occasionally.


This job operates in a professional office. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines, along with equipment necessary to design, draw, and execute plans.


This is a full-time exempt position. Days and hours of work will vary due to workload and needs of the company.

Average to high amount of travel is expected for this position
