Job Summary/Basic Function

Performs routine laboratory procedures according to standardized protocols and reports results. Receives regular supervision for most assignments. Experienced in standard microbiology techniques, especially bacterial cultures and sterile techniques is essential. Prior experience in basic immunology protocols such as flow cytometry, ELISA, Western blots, and/or immunohistochemistry is highly desired. Expected to perform the following duties after appropriate training and time in the position.

Responsibilities will include:

• Preparing cell wall extracts from live bacteria

• Maintaining mouse colonies by setting up matings and determining gender of offspring

• Euthanizing animals and preparing tissue

• Preparing common lab buffers and maintaining lab stocks of chemicals

• Participation in lab and departmental meetings

Minimum Qualifications

BS/BA/MS degree in one of the biological sciences, or chemistry.

Basic knowledge of routine technical/functional laboratory procedures. Basic computer skills to include knowledge of Internet and Microsoft Office software. Must be detail oriented and work as a team player. Excellent oral and written communication skills, attention to detail, organizational skills, ability to work independently and adhere to strict deadlines required. Must be professional, personable and able to deal with diverse personalities and cultures.

Work Hours

Typically Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 5pm.

Preferred Qualifications

2 – 4 years of relevant laboratory experience (preferred)

Physical Demands

Regularly required to stand, use manual dexterity, talk or hear; Frequently required to walk and reach with hands and arms; occasionally sit; frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; vision abilities include close vision, color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Potential exposure to fumes, airborne particles, or rodent dander. May work with toxic, caustic chemicals, radioactive materials, liquid nitrogen, human tissue or blood. Potential risk of electrical shock. Occasional exposure to cold 4C, and/or extreme cold -80C from freezers. Noise level is usually moderate.
