Job Summary/Basic Function

The Forsthoefel Lab seeks a motivated and organized team player to join our effort to understand fundamental and medically relevant mechanisms of regeneration. Using the model planarian Schmidtea mediterranea, our research aims to elucidate mechanisms of intestinal regeneration, and to develop a deeper understanding of genetic and biochemical pathways implicated in human gastrointestinal diseases like colon cancer, Crohn’s Disease, and ulcerative colitis. We utilize a variety of approaches including functional genomics, bioinformatics, molecular biology, biochemistry, and confocal microscopy. Our group is located in a newly renovated lab space, and is a member of the rapidly growing Functional and Chemical Genomics Program at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Responsibilities will include:

• Maintenance of the lab’s planarian colony.

• Ordering supplies, maintaining inventory, and generating stock solutions.

• Operation and maintenance of scientific equipment.

• Using bioinformatics tools (e.g., BLAST, primer3, Geneious) to identify gene homologs and design molecular cloning strategies.

• Cloning genes, and assessing expression (using in situ hybridization) and function (using RNA interference) in planarian tissues.

• Fixation and imaging of planarian specimens using light and fluorescent microscopes.

• Detailed documentation of experiments and results in lab notebook and spreadsheets.

• Data analysis (introductory statistical testing, quality assessment of sequence data, etc.).

• Generation of figures in Adobe, Excel, etc. for inclusion in papers and grant applications.

• Participation and presentation in lab/departmental meetings and planning sessions.
