Job Description

Role Purpose:

Provide spiritual and emotional support to patients, families, visitors and hospital employees by witnessing as a Christian and fostering holistic care of the patient in conjunction with other hospital personnel.


+ Minister to staff, visitors and volunteers through competent pastoral counseling.

+ Visit patients in assigned areas to acquaint them with the nature and service of the Pastoral Care Department. Contact patients upon requests, or referrals; follow up and help patients to accept illness in light of Gospel values by listening, counseling, praying and understanding.

+ Assist dying patients and their families in accepting death with dignity. Act as a liaison between staff, patients and family in areas of communication.

+ Plan and provide meaningful church services for patients, families, and personnel. Inform Catholic Priest liaison of sacramental needs and collaborates with director and priest regarding meaningful ecumenical chapel services.

+ In collaboration with nursing personnel and other allied health care professionals, assess individual patient needs and develop/implement a holistic health care plan through participation in regularly scheduled team conferences and discharge planning meetings.

+ With permission and/or at request of the Director, develop and provide various spiritual educational programs for patients, employees, families, students, or community services.

+ Maintain and enhance professional skills by keeping abreast of current pastoral care issues through reading, attending approved educational programs.

+ Help orientate new employees of the department and foster an appreciation of the pastoral associate/chaplain’s position. Maintain a volunteer chaplain program through an active recruitment process, meeting orientation requirements for hospital volunteers and departmental requirements for pastoral care and retrain as required.

+ Accurately and appropriately document patient visits in the patient medical records. Maintain necessary records as developed within the department.

+ Respond to all pager requests in a timely and courteous manner.

+ Perform other related duties as assigned that correspond to the overall function of this position.

Minimum Qualifications:

+ Bachelor’s Degree and two (2) units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) required. One of the required CPEs may be obtained within 18 months of moving into position.

+ Six months experience in a health related field. Pastoral competence, as demonstrated by personal integrity and pastoral identity. Emotional and spiritual maturity. A pastoral theology which is correlated with pastoral functioning.

+ Ecclesiastical endorsement required.

Preferred Qualifications:

+ Master’s of Divinity or related area preferred.

+ Board Certified with a national chaplain association preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Employees in this position are, or can be, required to possess the following physical capabilities:

+ Stooping, kneeling and/or crouching daily

+ Standing or walking more than 3 hours a day

+ Reaching, grasping, fingering, and/or feeling more than 3 hours a day.

+ Visual acuity in order to correctly distinguish skin tone variations, evidence of IV infiltration, infection; able to read telemetry, blood pressure gauges, etc.

+ Audio acuity in order to correctly distinguish various body sounds (i.e., respirations, heart tones, bowel sounds).
